Backstage at TG Live

Clarkson's carCheck out our backstage gallery from TG Live

So TG Live has been and gone and Sydney is slowly recovering from a serious bout of Top Gear fever. Around 70,000 of you made it to see the show at Homebush, with some travelling from Melbourne, Queensland – even Perth (geez, even we don’t like them that much).

And the boys didn’t disappoint, bursting onto the stage in true TG style  – behind the wheel of a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, a stunning Lamborghini Gallardo and some of the smallest cars ever conceived by man (or, in this case, boys).

The show was packed full of stunts, madness and general mayhem, with Clarkson and Hammond at their cutting best, especially when teasing Australian presenter, Steve Pizzati (or pizza oven, as Jezza calls him).

So tell us, what did you think of the show? And let us know how far you are travelled. Can you beat Ness, who told us she came all the way from Perth to see the show? And how did you place on the lap board?

I can’t beat Ness for distance travelled (I’m from the Penrith area), but I have brought together rather an interesting group of people to go with me. Along with a second Sydney-sider, I’ve got a Melbournian, two Novacastrians, a temporary Canberran and one from Murwillumbah.

Saw the show last night – loads of fun. My friend from Melbourne completely fell in love with the Lambo when we saw it in the Paddock after the show, the car soccer was fantastic (even though we lost) and the mini cars were hilarious.

I only had one complaint. The live-action ads at the start. Bad enough that we sat there watching a loop of ads for half an hour before anything happened, but to follow that up with several live ads was really overkill. ONE I could have coped with, but three was ridiculous! Every time I thought the show was getting going, it turned out to be another bloody ad!

Other than that, though, it was brilliant, and the pre- and post-show party was fantastic fun. Clarkson and Hammond dealing with the 9 year old kid who wanted to know if Richard was his father was just priceless.

I’m a fan that is travelling all the way from Bundaberg, QLD to see the show TWICE on Sunday. I am driving to the Gold Coast tomorrow and fly to Sydney really really early Sunday morning. Going to 11am and 2pm shows…then flying back late Sunday nite!! I am soooooooo excited!!!

I’m travelling over 1500kms to see Richard (and maybe a little of…The Stig!! haha…maybe Jeremy too!)

I would have liked to have seen more of The Stig to be honest. BUT IT WAS FANTASTIC!!! Maybe next year they might want to look at making the show longer and keeping the number of live ads down. Would Jeremy and Richard be able to walk down my side of the aisle next time too? I know I don’t own a Ferrari 360 Spider or an Audi A4 nor did I buy a platinum ticket but it just seemed a little one sided. The entire row I was in noticed that the aisleway they were walking along and interviewing was full of rich corporate types. Mind you Jeremy Clarkson certainly knows how to dish it out though doesn’t he!

I absoultly loved the show. It is good to see the boys getting out and having some fun on the road. I agree with the ads being over kill. But also you gotta remember about the sponsership side of things.

Other thing disappointed with was, The STIG should have gotten out of the car. Everyone loves seeing the stig.

Other than those two minor things the show was great. Would reccomend to anyone, even if you dont watch the show, it would still be a great experience.

The wide range of cars and stunts makes for a wonderful, excelerating night out.

Loved it boys. Make sure you come back again. I will definatly go.

The show was great. We had a fantastic time and hope to see it again next year.

One thing . . . the ‘punishment’ of Steve Pizzani with the motorcycle was just crude and demeaning. You could easily delete that scene without losing any of the humour. Steve, stand up for your dignity.

Oh yeah , , stop enjoying yourself so much Jeremy. If you lose your voice, the show is over!

Hello again guys, I have a bit of a request. There was one particular moment in the show that caused a great deal of hilarity from my friends and I, and which I’d really like to see again.

Any chance you could upload that brilliantly funny photoshopped photo of James in the mardi gras parade to the website? Because really, the world needs to see that.

We drove up from Canberra on Friday night to see the 8:00pm show, loved every moment of it (even if were in the nose bleed section of the stadium). Despite the TG motto of ‘ambitious but rubbish’ this was fantastic and it got better when the lad’s strayed away from the script – well done.

I saw the show with my dad, and I just have to say that I absolutely loved it!!!
The stunt driving was amazing, I wish I could drive a car like that! (I am at the moment too young to get a licence, but all in good time!) Every time an explosion went off I jumped about a foot in the air! Really all I am doing is retelling the show, because I loved every bit of it.

I especially loved car soccer, and I am sorry that hardly anyone was going for the English team, but I did like the outcome! 4-3! Doing the Cool Wall was also really…cool. And trying to do a lap by screaming and using different coloured pieces of paper, a very fun, yet difficult way to drive.

All in all I had a great time at Top Gear Live. It was great to see you guys and is was also great to see the Aston Martin DB9, wow that is a nice car.
Anyway, thanks for coming to Sydney, I had an absolute blast :)

to the guy above me. you have to understand that Jezza is from York(right up the top of the country) they’re supposed “real men” up those parts, I’m not even sure if they play football. It’s just Jezza’s sense of humour he does it everywhere over here the press exagerate he doesn’t really care as you can tell from the show’s he apologises and does something worse on the topic afterwards. And Hammond is encredibly small for a Brummy, he also has white teeth

Actually you from the UK don’t count cos you go see it when you’re at home. I reckon we win the distance thing cos we had to drive 3 hours to Perth then fly across. Gotta say guys, was a little disappointed. Some parts of the show were brilliant (the stunt driving was pretty cool). The ads were a bit over the top but I understand the need to get sponsorship. But whatever happened to signing stuff for your fans or a photo? We had diamond tickets & went to the VIP party also but when you’ve come so far & spent so much to come see your show would it kill you to sign a copy of your own book??

    2. J’burg….
    3. Sydney, Sund 11am 1:35:8 (I think)

The show was great, we drove up from Canberra for it. I went to the 5pm Saturday show. Our lap time sucked but I think since most of us had been outside looking around in 35 degree heat, we were all probably a bit tired.

Less music, more engine noise is my only complaint. Those three Ferraris would have sounded brilliant but I couldn’t hear them.

I think the show is going to only be in Sydney for a while yet as I read somewhere that Events NSW had signed a deal with the show until 2011.

We flew in from Adelaide on Thursday for the opening show.

It was awesome despite the fact that no cameras are allowed, which suck.

The three disappointing bits from the show are:

    1) Steve Pizza lacks the enthusiasm and ruins the whole Top Gear atmosphere
    2) James May is absent
    3) The last bit on the Stig is the most pathetic thing ever.

Other than that, the cars, the actions, the stunts were all perfectly executed.

Sorry Melbourne, Sydney won the rights to host it for the next couple of years. And Perth, suck it in, it will never happen in your city as no one would bother flying all the way to the east for the show.

But to be perfectly honest, the Olympic Park is not the best location for this type of show, it’s too far west and not very accessible.

I reckon if Melbourne have had the rights to host the show, it would have made it in Telstra Dome or something close to the city.

I flew from Brisbane, and my brother flew from Melbourne. What an awesome show, We didnt want it to stop! Also had a great chat with Warren Brown for about 10 minutes or so outside, what a great guy, very nice to chat to! Fantastic experience, would love to do it again!

Saturday night’s show was great. Although, the entire show could’ve been better if the music was turned down a little so you could hear the cars and tyres squealing…how often do you get to hear three Ferrari’s open up in Acer Arena?!

Flew up from Melbourne and got to see 2 shows – Fri & Sun. Would’ve seen another on Sat if the seats were any better. But had a great laugh! Loved the Soccer – seeing the near misses & the bang ups. Those little cars were looking battered by Sunday, all mended with sticky tape and bumpers missing. Great driving by Hammond! Would’ve loved to be in the passenger seat through it all! Hope they do come again next year – maybe extend their tour to go around Australia! Would’ve been great timing in Melbourne with the Grand Prix, Motorshow, and Airshow all happening in March. Anyway, it was great & I loved it. Left the guys a little ‘car’ gift, hope they got it…?

It was bloody awesome, already looking forward to next year, it was somewhat disapponiting a proper comparo of the FG and VE wern.t included in the localisation, i’m sure that Jeeza and Hammnod would have preferred the FG (remember the early episode devoted to fast ford’s, plus Holden’s UK partner is Vauxhall for goodness sake and GM is about cark it an be swallowed by teh Chinese and Indians, oh and the Falcon’s a much better car).

Im also upset that my sesh Sat 2pm lost our 2nd lacing but atleast an Aussie time is now on top (though being part Irish Dublin on top was almost as good) The ads went on a bit though Love the Beast looks good, read about it in TGA too.

Overall a fantastic show, my most enjoyable moment this year and I just wish Sat 2 had won the lap time.

It was great to see the guys live – sure beats an 18 year wait for tickets to the UK show.

I agree with lots of other views expressed here and thought the live ads at the front were naff.

Most of the show itself was great, but we could have done without driving the reasonably priced car.

A suggestion for future TGL’s – replace the reasonably priced car drive it with three roll-on dynos and let’s hear and see some of those beautiful sounding engines perform for real. The V8 utes on dynos in a comparo – awesome. It would fill the auditorium and create some real atmosphere!

We were at the 2pm show on Sat. and were fortunate to have paid for platinum seats – expensive but good. The show was brilliant. I came down from Brisbane, my son from Gladstone and we were not disappointed except for the repetition of the ads beforehand. But what’s to complain about really. Clarkson & Hammond came to entertain and they succeeded in a way only they can. Thanks boys. You were both just great. But Pizza Hut’s contribution was irrelevant and pointless – when is SBS going to dump TGA and let us just enjoy the real thing!

Turn down the volume of the music. I’d rather listen to the sound of the engines as I do not have the option to own these cars to hear them for myself. Otherwise great show. Will be back again next year.

Went on the Saturday Afternoon and came from Sydney. Not far. We won the soccer 7-2 and we came second in our star in a resonably priced car. (Damn Dublin) The small cars were awesome. It was a good show, just the best show I have ever seen and I saw Walking with Dinosaurs.

That Lambo nearly made me drool all over, it was beautiful and I sooooooooooooo want one! Top Gears on tonight, Top Gears on tonight!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!

Okay everyone who says the Australian Top Gear is Crap should let it die. I admit it’s not the same but it’s the best we’ve got and they can’t follow the same format as the English Show.

And Pizza Hut should be given an applause. he tried hard to entertain us and it didn’t help that the other stars were there. If it was TGA he would’ve been the most enthusiastic.

What a Fantastic Show! Well done, Jeremy, Richard and Steve, for a great time!!!!!!

Only thing was, they should have warned people (Maybe they Did), about the fireworks and bangs, cause when I first heard it, nearly had a heatattack.

Being 3m away from them, when they entered the Audiance for the COOL WALL, was so great, to see them up close.

Awsome cars, loved the White HSV W427 Cop car come out and drift etc. We won car soccer 4-2, good accident between Hammond and someone on our side, Hammonds bumper fell off, and had to be re-attached. The drum set made of car parts was great, might give it a go.

We were the Slowest around the Track in a Reasonable Priced Car, but they guy they took a pic of looked like Jesus (According to Clarkson). Was quite funny.

Will definatly go next year, and this time, my mates will be there (Boy are they Envious).

    Hail Top Gear Live.

I travelled from the Sunshine Coast in QLD to see the guys on February 5th and it was seriously the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire life! I had a VIP ticket so after the show Jeremy and Richard came out to answer questions – including mine! I recorded it on my camera and I upload it and post the link for it here so everyone can see.

Thank you so very much to everyone involved, (especially Jeremy and Richard), for an excellent night – it was perfect.

P.S. Jeremy’s booty looks great in those jeans.

Like Ness, my sister and I travelled all the way from Perth to see the show, and it sure didn’t disappoint!
While I agree with the comments about too many ads at the beginning, the rendition of ‘It’s just too good to be true’ was priceless.
Once the boys came on through, I don’t think I stopped laughing for the next hour and a half. Jeremy’s complete lack of PC was very refreshing, and Hammond was a wonderful balance, plus a very good looser, considering Steve and the Aussie boys pipped them 4-3 for car soccer…which was possibly better than watching an actual soccer match!
The show was amazingly diverse, and kept us all keyed up and involved the entire time!
It was a sensational night, and not one I’ll ever forget!

Saturday 8pm show was great. Came all the way from Adelaide, everything was booked back in October as the girlfriend was so excited she could not say no to my request to go.
Went too quickly and I thought the second best package would have given us closer seats for $140, but they weren’t too bad. We brought binoculars along.
Drooled over the Granturismo out in the show room. Hope next year they can pull a lot more cars to put on show.

But my ‘what the!’ is Hyundai’s sponsership of the show. Wrong, wrong, wrong. I was interested in the Audis, but I only saw a couple of old people checking out the Hyundais on show. Does anyone want to buy a Hyundai after seeing the show on the weekend?

How did people get the paddock passes? For the NZ show you can buy them as a added surcharge to the ticket.. But that wasn’t the case with the sydney show, was it?

I would have loved to see that.. But all my begging wouldn’t sway the security..

But i did get to meet a driver that was in the show, he was really nice and I managed to get him to get some of my merch signed by The Stig.

I was VERY DISSAPOINTED with the show. If the best Top Gear Live had to offer was making jokes about parking bikes in peoples bums then its time to move on. There was nothing about the show that really stood out. It as pretty lame and over priced for what it was. I would not recommend the show to anyone and I certainly won’t waste my money again. If you want the TV experience then stay at home. Much better.

We travelled from Perth to see the show. Yes we too were mad! I bought my husband tickets for his birthday, but unfortunately he found it disappointing.
Although parts were funny, (Clarkson interacting with the audience is always good fun), however most of the gags between the presenters came across as rehearsed. May be it was just because we were the first show on Saturday morning and they hadn’t warmed up yet.
The show was shorter than I expected, especially after purchasing expensive Diamond tickets, plus air tickets, plus ………. and watching a continuous loop of ads and then live ads, boring! And where was the Stig? He came in right at the end and the finale, I must say, was disappointing. More Stig please next time.
On the good side, loved the car soccer (I think I was one of the six audience members supporting the UK in the soccer!), the stunt drivers were amazing and the Colander of Death, brilliant. Plus, love, love, love the show and the TG team. Am a true fan and this will not put me off in the slightest.
So all in all, it was ok but probably won’t be allowed to go to the show again, after the comments about how much money I spent, not worth the earache!

Yes we traveled from Perth for the show & even took my 80 year old mother ( I deserve a medal !) we all thought it was well worth the trip, but an hour & a half just wasn’t enough ! Stunt car drivers were awesome, Steve Pizzati held his own – because he had to, Hyundai Soccer was great, live ads not a good idea, Colander of Death terrific, Not enough Stig though. We were at the last session on Sunday & thought they were all a bit tired, missed James too – he balances the other 2 out. Overall a really good show but try & make it to the West coast first next time there are so many petrol-heads over here !!

Hooray for 3D things involving the Stig and explosions! I quite enjoyed the Apache thingy.

The stunt driving was awesome, and the fantastic handbrake-parking-into-th e-line made me want to quit my job and take up driving lessons. (Because I’m very good at parking, but now feel inspired to make it more exciting)

Needs More Stig and less advertising. But then, I say that about lots of things. Don’t worry, Top Gear Related People, when I rule the world we’ll do away with corporate sponsors and associated nonsense, and I’ll give you a Rather Large Budget and off you can all go…

I liked that the lunchtime weekend more-family-attended session was FAR more inappropriate than the opening night gig. :)

No matter how many times they went off, the flames and fireworks had me jumping like a girl… oh wait… I am a girl! The guys were great, but it would have been even better if Captain Slow had made the trip with them.

    Hey guys!

I had an absolute blast seeing the 5pm show on Friday. My friend and I made sure we got there at 2:30 so we could see all the cars before hand. We couldn’t take our eyes away from the Astons because they were so damn hot.

The show was fabulous! I had so much fun! The ads at the beginning got on my nerves a bit, but I just couldn’t stop thinking that I was seeing Top Gear Live, so that got rid of the frustration straight away. I loved how much interaction there was for the audience. Loved the Cool Wall, loved how we were able to be SIARPC and I loved the fact that we beat England in car soccer :) The stunt driving was superb. I just couldn’t stop staring with with my jaw attached to the ground. Seriously amazing job. I take my hat off to the drivers. The show was, as always, well presented. I loved the bickering when the cars came out for the Cool Wall segment. I also almost peed myself when The Stig did his bit. I enjoyed it. The Stig driving I mean :)

My only two problems with it was that it didn’t go long enough and there wasn’t enough Stig. I hated leaving the arena. I just wanted to hide under the seat and stay for the next show, but the ushers would have found me. Damn…

I hope you come back soon! My friend and I had so much fun. We will be sitting right up the front next time, which will probably result in our eyebrows being burnt off by the flames :)

Loved it guys! Hope you come back soon!!

I came from Queenscliff, Victoria, (my ever first time on a plane too!) to see the wonderful Top Gear Live at 11am on the 7th of February. I saved up for a Diamond ticket and I was two rows from the front. I’m kind of broke now but it was well worth the money! Quite frankly, I would have gone all the way to England to see it filmed if the waiting list for tickets wasn’t so absurdly long!
It was everything I’h hoped and more! The gorgeous James May was sorely missed but Richard was even more ridiculously adorable in real life (despite looking even shorter!) and Jeremy was suitably hilarious. Steve ‘Pizza Hut’ Pizatti did exceptionally well filling in for James, despite being somewhat abused with a motorbike…
The insane driving made me want to get my licence (I’ve been 16 for a while and haven’t been bothered … until now!) and I laughed so hard it hurt. The audience input for the Cool Wall and Lap certainly revved the crowd up (sorry, if you could pardon the pun), even though our session got a really slow lap time.I think those were my favourite segments.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough of the Stig. The 3D routine was awesome but it would’ve been nice to see a little more of him and his ace driving!
Thank you, Jeremy and Richard, for a fantastic show and next time, bring that wonderful James with you and come to Melbourne!

Pity the 3 Ferraris weren’t real.
It was a bit of a ripoff paying to see disguised MR2′s pretending to be Maranello stallions. I guess the insurance on a coupla million dollars worth of super cars was too much to swallow.
At least those of us in the know didn’t swallow the fraud.

I LOVED the show, but I have had a week now to think…and I think that the show was awesome, but it would have been better had there been James there too AND if they had some Mercedes, BMW, Lamborghini’s and the Bugatti Veyron on display in the foyer to have a look over! I wanted to get up and close with the Gallardo
and the Veyron….that’s what would make the experience better!

BJ … *YAWN* … I’m surprised that as a leading racing industry figure you would lower yourself to comment on this site. Why, surely you’re far too busy, being HRT’s test driver and all… What’s that? Actually, you don’t own a car? Or have a licence? Or a sense of humour? And mum still won’t buy you long pants? Don’t cry. It’s okay.

The only question I ever ask of a vehicle is ‘does it tow?’ However I do find the TopGear TV show amusing, usually due to the antics of the presenters, two idiots with no shame and one bumbling English olde worlde village resident. I went to the show in Sydney as an ‘accompanying spouse’. I was hoping to hear some of the witty repartee occasionally imparted on the screen. I came away from the show, realising that a) I have too much disposable income and b) the Top Gear presenters are propped up on screen by good script-writers. Ad lib entertainment at the live event was at a minimum, while the same old ‘guaranteed a laugh’ gags were wheeled out if Jezza could be bothered. The show smacked of ‘give us your money and buggar off’ which annoyed me greatly at the time, but come to think of it, was appropriate behaviour for the ‘don’t give a damn’ caricature Clarkson portrays on screen.
