Jay Leno: behind the scenes

Posted by Top Gear Australia at 8:40 pm on Monday October 12, 2009

Only last week our telly Mole was saying how much better the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment works when we’ve got a proper car nut on – and this week we had, as Jeremy put it, the “world’s biggest petrolhead”.

And he seemed genuinely pleased to be with us too. He told us it was his favourite show. He was happy to chat in the ‘stained environment’ (his words) we call our production office and he wanted to talk about cars.

He described Jeremy’s interview technique as ‘gentle by his usual standards’ and, hilariously, referred to our reasonably priced car as a little eco town car by Chevy. That’s gentle by our guests’ standards…

On the way back from the studio he stopped for a while to check our the McMoss we had in (see pic) – I asked him if he’d buy one and he gave me two reasons why not: he already had a SLR coupe and ‘if it hasn’t got a windscreen, there’s no woman on earth that’ll be interested in riding in it’.

But such is Jay’s interest in cars that he has his own show on NBC in the States called Jay Leno’s garage. There’s a website too. And the entire time he was with us at TG he had a small camera crew recording his experience.

Unfortunately, techie gremlins meant couldn’t embed the original on this page so here’s a version we found on YouTube. But seriously, check out his site. Even after watching Jeremy read out that list of all Jay’s cars on the telly you still won’t believe what he’s got:

Well from Australia on TV, may I just say that no one in their right minds bothers to watch Australian Top gear,, its tradjic, we prefer to watch Oprah instead(which doesnt say much…), but when its James, Richard and Jeremy (&the stig) time of year, SBS actually is watched! Jay must be raking in a ****load of moneyy to have that many cars :)

We all love Aussie Top Gear? You must be joking? lol It made me embarrassed to be Australian that show. Its all scripted with poor attempts at humour, there is no ad lib fluency that the UK guys manage. Steve Pizati is really the most annoying presenter of any show putting on the the most forced Australia twang since Steve Irwin. His record for saying “grouse” was 4 times in one episode, the show was awful. I was going to go see Top Gear Live last year but when I heard he was replacing Richard Hammond I gave it a miss, is he doing it again next year? I hope not I would like to see the show!
