I like the boys on TGA, so I’ll probably still watch it, just to see how it goes, but if channel nine treats it the way they usually treat shows like this, I suspect I won’t be watching for long.

Sometimes I really hate the fact that we live in a world where money is seen as the ultimate justification for anything. Never mind which channel will make the better program, or what the viewers think, oh no! Channel nine has more money, therefore, they are Better, and they get what they want.

God dammit. Its pretty disheartening to see a show with integrity on a fully blown commercial network. Its not a commercial TV kind of show. It feels wrong.

Watch Nine totally whore the show out. God, I can already see the cross promotions on A Current Affair and the bloody Today show. “Hey, look how good we are! We’ve got Top Gear!” SBS builds up the profile of the show in this country, then Nine mooches their way in and claims it because they’ve been too incompetent to build their own properties.

I mean first off, say goodbye to watching Top Gear starting on time. And be prepared for it to be bumped in favour of Two and a Half freaking Men. Say what you will about SBS, but they’ve stuck by the show, and in the past year or so have only ceased broadcasting when the cricket was on.

This is all disdain over the UK show, by the way. I couldn’t be buggered what happens to the Australian incarnation.

How will a 48 to 52 minute show fit into an hour timeslot with a network that loves disregarding its ad quota and pushes close to 20 minutes of ads in the hour? Butchered of course! Add to that the annoying flashovers for another few minutes telling us to watch their latest reality crap. Then putting more adds during the credits that now only occupy the bottom 2 inches of your screen. You will be missing 10mins of every episode so you can be sure a whole segment will be axed every week. Time to flood channel 9 with letters and phone calls now before they start the chopping block. They must be told fans will only accept the full entire length of the show. Nothing less will be acceptable.

I love the claim that “this is the end of Top Gear.” Yeah, because it’s only Australier that watches :p

This is genuinely horrible news! Based on Nine’s previous behaviour with pretty well any half decent show, we’d be lucky if it sticks to a given time slot for more than 5 minutes, and stays on air for more than a few weeks.

And next, just make totally sure it’s ballsed up severely by recruiting a new team to present it, adding insult to injury by making that Warne idiot one of them.

What a terrible start to the weekend for Top Gear & motoring fans everywhere

Thanks for nothing. Now that it’s on Nine it will be plastered with ads, go from 50 to 90 minutes and then after a few weeks be moved to an 11:45pm time slot on Sunday (but only if it’s not interupted by Tennis, Rugby League, Golf, Lawn Bowls or the South Icelandic Curling Championships), finally to disappear up it’s own fundamental orrifice after Nine has totally screwed what was a great show.

Top Gear UK is a 60 minute show. As a massive Top Gear fan living in the US does this mean we’ll have the US Top Gear experience where they cut 18 minutes of content from each episode so they can squeeze it into a 60 minute slot and get their 18 minutes of adverts?

Not good.

I think the sales director for the BBC sums it up with her comment about the ‘Top Gear brand’ and a long-standing partner like Nine.

The BBC and Nine don’t give a sh!t about the fans, all they care about is the brand and themselves.

Looks like I’m going to have to up my internet plan. I get to see the show when I want and how I want and Nine gets 1 less person on the ratings. If we all do this it will be a ratings dud and they will be begging SBS to take it off their hands!

I don’t know what is happening in the land of UK TV at the moment what with this news on top of the news that Tony Stamp has been punted from The Bill. What’s next, Dr Who being turned into a cross dresser!

So, you have finally fallen for the standard Australian ploy of commercial TV networks, namely allowing ABC or SBS (as in this case) to make a success of something and then swoop in and scoop all the benefits. The biggest mistake in this decision is that Nine do not broadcast to many areas of regional Australia and it is those of us in these areas that feel cheated the most. I am confident that Nine will milk the show for everything it is worth and then as usual chnage its broadcast time (unnanounced) and put on yet another episode of Two and Half Idiots. Oh well back to the internet for Top Gear it is! Bad decision guys!

You can count on nine cutting out even more content to fit in even more ads. Don’t the BBC know that Australian commercial stations put in the longest as breaks in the world – that is a fact BTW, look it up! But I suppose they have the $$$$. I avoid watching nine at all costs due to how loud their ad breaks are – it’s just to irritating. How utterly tragic.

I know it’s nice to have the mag, TG Live and the TV show now all under the one ‘banner’ so to speak. But when the TV show gets buried at 9.30pm and later, dropped for whatever other event that happens to come along, then moved to 11.30pm and finally dropped off the schedule all together (and if it gets shown on GO! – watch the audience drop by two thirds immediately) have fun trying to maintain those ratings.

And god forbid should Warnie be involved in the local version. Watch the female demographic drop to 0 and the male demographic drop by 98%. Channel 9 are not exactly known for good taste (they brought back Hey Hey for heavens sake)

Well the BBC charges a license fee which we in Australia don’t have, so fair enough we have to put up with ads. Top Gear has to turn a profit, otherwise there’d be no show.

But.

Why Nine? They are the worst network, they have no respect for the shows they put on, no respect for their audience, and will do anything and everything to turn a buck. Just look what they did with the West Wing. It was supposed to be on at 11pm (if I remember correctly) but the times often change, 10.30pm, 11.30pm, all without any notice whatsoever. Then, because ratings weren’t as good as an infomercial, they announced just before the airing of episode 6 of season 3 that it was the season finale. That season actually went for 24 episodes. They outright lied to their audience! The West Wing, like Top Gear, had a cult following in Australia, and then pick up by the Nine Network, and in the case of the West Wing it never got the numbers Nine wanted. So, just imagine what would happen to TGA if it doesn’t work out for them.

I hope your contract with Nine lets you sue the pants off them when they screw up your franchise.

I have to agree, after downloading the latest season from iTunes and seeing all the edited out stuff that SBS cut to make room for adds and how it made it an even better show god knows what 9 will do. Say goodbye to the news and the cool wall for good, not to mention other segments to fit in some spaz add about another crappy homegrown ganster tv show that no-one watches.
Nothing like advertising idiots and BBC morons getting together without seeing what 9 is actually like, welcome to the dark side of TV BBC, any channel would’ve been better that the idiots at nine.

So on SBS we lost Stig’s laps and the news. Channel 9 has far more ads…how much else will we lose?! I know TG website tried to help out by putting the missed segments up on here, but after channel 9 is done with it, the site might as well put the entire eps up here themselves!

I can’t see any reason to bother watching this on TV now. I used to support it on SBS, but there’s no chance I’ll support that rubbish channel 9. Like so many others here I’ll be headed to the net for my TG.

Well they may have obtained more money for the show but comments over here will have the show diving in popularity due to the commercial content that will be put in the show by Channel 9.
It has lost me as I have first hand knowledge of other shows taken over by 9 ( such as the footy broadcasts) which when they are not live have an extra 30 minutes of ads.
Vale Top Gear not even Shane Warne will be able to make you work.

I’ll accept for 9 to have Top Gear but as long as they promise to increase the time slot because the amount of ads they put on is bloody ridiculous!! So after SBS finally decide to put the news back on in the last two episodes of series 13, they reward us by selling the right to air TG to 9 which has ads every 5 minutes that go for at least 3!! I can’t believe it actually happened. This show which SBS helped build up in Australia, has gone to the network renowned for its fat cheque-book.
I will not watch Top Gear on an ad-infested commercial network. That’s it. Simple. TGUK or TGA. And what’s more, I’m not alone, just look at the other posts. The ratings that TG got is due to people like me who will now switch off.

Did anyone at the BBC bother to check how Nine actually run shows? I have been a Top Gear faithful for most of my life; since the early 80s when I was in Primary School in the UK.

I too am worried about the move to Channel Eddie. The only way the integrity of the show can be assured is if a 90 min format is adopted. Channel Ten has successfully done this with Good News Week, so it’s not unrealistic.

As for the involvement of that former cricket-playing imbecile, Channel Nine needs to understand that it will kill Top Gear Australia. After two seasons, I’m getting used to Steve and Warren. The introduction of Shane Warne would destroy the chemistry they’ve built. The bloke could throw a ball, why does that make him a good candidate? I won’t even consider watching it if he’s involved.

As others have noted, comments on forums such as this are ignored. I implore everyone to go back to the 80’s and write a letter addressed to “The Programming Department, Channel Nine, in your Capital City”. It is the only way to make them comprehend the challenge they have accepted by stealing the show from SBS.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt, until the first show goes to air. But it may mean resorting to increasing my internet plan.

Bad idea is all I have to say, the previous 50 plus post sums up the feelings of most fans.

Just a note, SBS is given an edited copy from the BBC they do no edit it, they have no choice. But I have to wonder will the BBC have a contract with Nine that they must show the same length per ep as they did on SBS? If so I can see eps running say 75min with ads.

The only things saving TG from being axed is they only have short seasons.

Either way I’ll be watching the new season in just over a month, not waiting for Nine to fill the screen with pop up ads and cut the closing credits in the name of promos for Hey Hey it Wednesday!

Fingers crossed we don’t lose more of the show to adds when Top Gear moves to Channel 9. But for now we still have it on SBS as far as I can see for now. It looks like we will be getting ‘unseen episodes’ from older UK Top Gear episodes. Top Gear I would say is my favourite TV Show going around and I don’t mind whether it’s English or OZ, anything will do.

We will have Kerry Anne Kennelly on as our first star in an economical car, and we will be road testing the new Toyota Aurion.

TGUK episodes will be shown IN FULL, split between 2 weeks, so Series 14 will be on air for 14 weeks!

While I am not convinced that the above comment by “Nine programming” is actually genuine there has been a lot of talk on various sites about Sam Newman being involved with the show.

This would clearly be completely stupid.

Half of TG’s audience are women and Sam Newman is a misogynistic, racist pig – not to mention he has been charged over road rage. His material is totally inappropriate for kids and despite many adult references, TG is at its heart a family show. Plus no one outside Victoria likes him at all. My nine year old son loves TGA but if Sam is on it – there is no way I would let him watch it, even if Sam was a guest.

The best thing about TGUK is how inclusive it is I can watch it with my kids or my parents / in-laws or friends and even people who don’t like cars love it. I wonder what is happen to TGA’s existing hosts I hope they keep Warren.

If Sam Newman goes anywhere near TGA I will never watch the show again. I’m Victorian & I can’t even handle him. I keep hoping I will run into him for one of those street interviews so I can dong him one on TV. The Footy Show is hosted by a bunch of complete morons that wouldn’t know what intelligence was if I shoved it up thier you know what.

As far as I am aware Jeremy Clarkson is the one who has the final say about virtually all things related to the TG brand. So if you want him to help get it off 9, your not going to get far. He’s the one that signed off on it to the best of my knowledge. He probably thinks it is the right thing, getting more exposure for the TG brand but obviously does not know what 9 are like when it comes to ads & terrible programming.

Oh yeah, unseen episodes my butt!! They are unseen episodes because they are just bits of previously aired episodes edited to buggery. Can’t have seen the episode when it was never recorded like that in the first place.

As for voting with out remotes, it doesn’t work. The last I heard 1000 surveys are sent outeach week to “random” people, carefully selected off a list of applicants. Those surveys are filled out for the week of what was watched when & the results are tallied using a formula af averages for our population. Turning off doesn’t help. They don’t know when or what we are watching. Nor do they care so long as the advertising dollars keep rolling in.

All of the above, with exception perhaps of a very, very few points.

SBS cut too much out of TG UK eps already for my liking. Nine will do it to a ridiculous extent. This will be fine for people that don’t realise this. But people that do will continue to watch it in other ways (and often within 24 hours of each episode airing in the UK).

Note also that TG was on Australian pay TV before it was on SBS. First a cut down version on BBC World, then also the full version on one of the XYZ channels.

BTW, icedvovo, the ABC did try making that motoring program at the turn of the millenium. It was called “Dimensions on the Move.” It was better than the name suggests. One of the minor presenters was TG AU’s Warren Brown.

I don’t think there should be an Australian TV show heavily based on UK show. It will never be as good – it will always look like it’s the poor cousin. Using the name is fine, as could be sharing a few elements. But such a show really needs to be different, if only by drawing on additional sources of inspiration.

What a F$%king load of S^&t CH9 will do this show, cant anybody remember CH 9 ver “The Car Show”, what a good job they did with it, cant wait to see how their new 26min TG show goes… CH9 can F^&k off i wont watch it. Dilligas i remember “The Car Show” quite distinctly because it was rubbish! Glen i’m a nobody who doesnt have a last name because I can’t remember it was as dull as watching paint dry. They used to test motorbikes on it as well, yet it was called “The Car Show” WTF.

I refuse to watch MASH any more, the number of ads allowed now MUST be greater because having seen the show so many times that I know the script by heart I KNOW that their are large parts missing, really shows badly when a punchline comes at the end of the episode and the start of the joke was cut out.
The Mentalist and other shows go to ads mid sentence to cram in more ads.
Top Gear episodes ARE 60+ minutes of actual program(UK), SBS cuts some here to fit with 3 ad breaks, so just how much Top Gear will we get to see in 2010.
We can’t blame channel 9, we know that no Aussie network is here for the benefit of the viewer, it’s all about money, maybe if nobody watches SBS will get it back again.

This is a bad idea. Ch9 have a history of getting people hooked on a show then it progressively gets aired later and later. Before we know it, we will see TG at 2am! Fcuk CH9 and FcuK warnie. If this move has to happen, for fuck sake, leave the format alone!!

They can have topgear australia- cause it is stuffed up the way it is.
But if they have topgear UK they will absolutely wreck it.

I feel like I’ve said it 17 thousand times, SBS didn’t cut anything from the episodes. They were pre-cut when they received the eps from BBC International.

Channel Nine is putting it on to the new Digital channel and it will be the full show.

They are still only talking to Warne and several other including wazza and co.

Nine might actually be better than SBS nine might show the whole show instead of cutting alot of it out think how long the footy show goes for and how long Hey, Hey went for nine can and does make shows go over the hour and SBS there biggest shows only go for an hour (not including sport or speedweek).
BUT having said that they probaly wont show classic TGUK when the new series is off like SBS does and NINE KNOWS HOW TO MURDER SHOWS.

i have alway relied on the net for TG due to the edits commercial networks have to make to fit it in. but i also support sbs. they took a risk and it payed off. i know that tg is one of the only things most of my friends watch on that network. With the disaster of the local version, i am dreading to see what 9 will do to it. ill watch where i can but if i get messed around like farscape again, bring on internet tv.

Channel Nine will just kill it. Absolutely kill it. And with their extra ads, even more of the show would be chopped. I sincerely hope that more full seasons come out on DVD, where we can actually watch the real top gear.

What a mess. While TGA was never anything to brag about, I didn’t mind sitting down to watch it on a Monday night.

I won’t be watching it now if Shane Warne will be hosting it, and I can see already that it wont last more than a season or two.

As with all the major networks, if it can’t pull record numbers in prime-time – axe it, that’s what will happen with TGA.

As for the UK counterparts – no loss there, I’ve been watching it thanks to channel BT/usenet for years, as if watch episodes from 1, 2 or 3 seasons prior to the current UK season!!!

So the demise of begins. Had found it was becoming too formulaic and it’s move to a commercial channel such as Nein shows it’s now purely on a revenue grab. The search will begin for a successor!

If money is all Channel 9 understands then we should contact every company that advertises during Top Gear when they air it and tell them you are boycotting their products till Channel 9 shows the entire show, reduces their ad content and stop those constant annoy flashovers with even more ads!

I should have mentioned in my last post I tried to email Channel 9 with my concerns to find out that they dont accept electronic complaints only ones in writing through regular post. This is their way of reducing the amount of complaints they get on their doorstep, even though the regulator Free TV has told them to start accepting electronic complaints, but they believe themselves to be above regulation and ignore is request.

The fundamental problem, is that Nine are the TV Network aimed at the lowest common denominator – and none of us that watch TG like to think of oursleves as such.
TG is made by a non commercial network with no real commercial ties. Therefor it has remained blissfully unblemished. A bit like the ABC’s Torque used to be. (In fact I think that Jezza has creditted Peter Wherrett in the past).
The problem now will be two-fold – firstly Nine will bastardise the TGUK show with ads. No question and the earlier comment about meter and comic timing is incredibly valid. The second is that the Aussie show, which was frankly beginning to come together – will be forever compormised by Nine heavily commercial bias that revolves around cross-promotion and commercialisation.
So – you have a show produced by a fundamentally socialist broadcaster, being run by a boradcaster famously just ot the right of genghis khan and equally as mercenary when it comes to revenue.
All I can say is thank God for the Internet.
Andy, Jez and the lads take note – if its all about the bucks for you guys then doubtless you have made the right decision. If you have any self-respect and desire to remain credible the perhaps it would have been wise to acsertain reaction among your hard core fans before such a move.

The advert thing doesn’t really bother me because even when it was on SBS I’d still just download the eps rather than watch it on TV when it screens, but the Nine lameness will infect the entire show. All the ’stars’ will be channel 9 ‘personalities’… at least SBS found the occasional car nut to pad out their roster of half-known people on the company payroll with a show to shill.

The SBS version rarely got stuck into a car that was clearly lame, and the Nine version will be even more kid-gloves. It will become The Car Show all over again.

Their only hope is to retain the existing hosts and carry on as is from series 2; it wasn’t perfect, but at least they were on track and finished well. Go changing hosts or mucking with the format and it will be as good as dead in the water.

If there is a silver lining, it would have to be that Nine at least own more cameras than SBS, so at the track runs might finally get shot correctly.

Has anyone stopped to consider that if what someone else has posted is true that the show will be moving to Nine’s second digital channel, that that alone will kill ratings…

Not everyone is digitally enabled yet… so people with either a digital TV, Set top box or aerial will be screwed!

– Ch9 won’t decide on a timeslot and it will end up showing at 1am thursday nights after 3 weeks then get axed.

TGA on nine = FAIL!

It’s not something the “general public” want to watch on T.V – if they do allocate it to the new nine channel, they will loose out also.

SBS had a cliche market – rev heads. They also don’t require ratings like the commercial networks do in order for a shows longevity. Nine will cut their losses and axe it within a season.

The digital age is bliss, fat monthly quotas, fast connections, usenet, torrents, HQ DTV rips – you just can’t lose.

75% of my daily viewing comes via my telephone line, 25% through that coat hanger outside on the roof. The industry knows how many viewers the lose due to this every night, and it must be killing them.

Give the viewers what they want, or you wont have any left!

Well I for one decided to start letting Clarkson & the BBC know just how ticked off we really are. I have started posting on the UK forums about how betrayed we feel about the move to 9 & what a disaster they will make of the show. Also about losing many loyal viewers to watching it on the web. I suggest you all do the same thing. Hopefully they will get the message & do something about it when the contract with 9 expires.

I spoke to Channel 9 and they claim to know nothing about any public opposition to their taking over the show and that their ads comply with the law. (Even though the mentalist was over the limit this week because i timed it) The guy to complain at is Justin Bradshaw Channel 9 PO Box 27 Willoughby NSW 2068 They claim that phone complaints mean nothing to them and they wont give an email address for complaints even though Free TV has told them too, they just ignore the regulators.

No use going to channel 9 with complaints about to many adds go straight to ABC’s Media watch program and shame them out of it. Although commercial channels these days seem to be a law unto themselves.

As for TG and TGA moving I’ll have to look on the bright side and say i’ll see how they go fingers crossed they won’t stuff the hole thing up

There seems to be a lot of negative comment about Ch9 doing this while I admit the thought of Shane Warne doing this is not good. But some seem to have very short memories, the SBS attempt at an Australian was pretty dire it was like watching a slow motion train wreak the second was better than the first but they only changed one of the original hosts, it should have been all three.
