Top Gear Oz: we’re back in 2011!

Posted by Top Gear Australia at 10:13 am on Tuesday December 14, 2010

Great news – as I write this, I’m preparing for our first pre-production meeting for TopGear Australia, Series 4. Anyone close to or involved in media will know how difficult it is to attract and maintain an audience, so it’s really heartening that Nine has again taken up the challenge of making a localised interpretation of this great TV brand.

And for that, I thank you all. Whether you loved Series 3, hated it or felt not much at all, the fact you tuned in has given us another opportunity to take those learnings and do better next time.

Which I know we will. Making television is little different to anything else: the more often you do it, the better you get. Series 3 was, I believe, a significant step over the first two. From story ideas to script to on-screen performance, I know we’ll take another leap with Series 4.

I feel we’re on course to make something comfortably Australian; a show many people can enjoy and feel accurately represents this nation and our car culture. Okay, not every blog respondent on here is as enthusiastic as I am, and that’s fine, but knowing what I know about some of the early plans for 2011 makes me really upbeat about where we’re headed.

And before you ask, I can’t tell you when it will go to air, what night of the week, how many episodes or what time. But you will be watching Shane, Steve and me again, and there will be Australian (and possibly world) firsts.

Yep, that’s a big promise – but I wouldn’t make it if I didn’t have insight.

So with the 2010 drawing to a close, I say again: thanks. Here are the visual highlights of Series 3 to enjoy once more…

Just one question: When are you going to air the last episode of Season 3? Nine ran ads for it, then pushed it back for the National IQ test, then didn’t bother to show it at all!

Will we get to see it?

The best part of the new season was the old Ford for your reasonably priced car. Are the spare tyres filled with cement?

Series 3 definitely had the right hosts, all that is need to work on the chemistry a bit and you’ll have a massive hit!

If I have any doubt about the show I would have to say there’s 2 annoyances.
    – Get rid of Shane Warne
    – Stop saying pretzel, and you beauty. It was great back in the 70’s and 80’s but it’s 2010-11, it isn’t funny anymore.

Other then that, bring on series 4!

Will the producers or who ever does this show get it through their head/s that topgear oz simply does not work, its too little, too late. The UK version has already established itself too well. Sorry but go away, don’t return. And with the money saved, sack the person who does the channel 9 scheduling and hire a new one, because that person does not know how to show a tv series in order and keep it that way!!!

How much experience do you have in producing a show ????? bet the answer is none!

I don’t know about all you other pretzels but I’m just not sure if this is going to work. As much as these three pretzels claim not to be imitating those other three pretzels it sure seems that way. Then, they get that other pretzel (ex-cricketer / current-pretzelwit) on there as well to make it all that little bit more annoying. For pretzel’s sake, just let it die. Pretzel.

I’m a little suprised there’s talk of a fourth season, I hadn’t realised we’d seen a third! Three episodes? Surely Channel 9 can do better than that, perhaps the rights cost too much?

Having said that, the three episodes were a great start, just please do not bring Shane Warne back, it’s bad enough seeing him in the papers etc. let alone on Topgear attempting to sound and look like a driver.

There were some good thoughts amongst the bull Have a look if you haven’t and consider.

I really want this show to succeed and I’ll give you another go.
But please, don’t try to script the “funny” bits, just enjoy yourselves and the entertainment will flow by itself.

Definitely NO to Shane Warne. He was a spin bowler, not a good cricketer, and most certainly not a Motoring Journalist.

He is not funny, not entertaining, and makes me want to turn off the TV.

However, seeing as the drongoes at Nine think he’s so great that the are giving him his own show, I guess with the “cross promotion” crap that substitutes for substance, he’ll be foisted upon you regardless of what the audience are clearly saying.

    Warne Factor = Turn-off Factor

You may have to keep the main format for contractual reasons (I`m guessing) but they dont have an idiot ex sportsman doing car tests.
Theres plenty of good cars here to test, what about the Puma clubmans in victoria? or any of the Locosts built around the country. We dont need extras, if you have to stick with the TG format do so, warney has no part in that format

Congrats on the new series. I guess I might be old school, but it would be nice if you could squeeze some more car reviews in between scripted lines and improbable situations. Yes I know that is the Top Gear formula, but the poms do that best and you guys really don’t have the budget for it.

Have a look at Top Gear USA for some ideas. They actually get more car talk in, even though they follow a similar format. Actually it would be nice if Top Gear Australia was a bit more old school Top Gear UK in style and gave some of our local and unique cars a review now and then. Note every week, but just sometimes. Its not like we can count on any other show in Australia to do them justice.

Anyway congrats again and please NO SHANE WARNE. The only reason he should be on my television, is if he is playing cricket.

Glad you got the fourth series as was worried about the lack of news the last few weeks. Been watching since the start through the evolution of presenters and think you have got it about right now.

As many have already said, ditch the Warne. He brings nothing to the show.

Keep up the good work chaps.

Yep – get rid of Warney… We only had to put up with him when he was getting us wickets. I even turn off the cricket when he is commentating now…

Lets do more shows about motoring in Australia. There are thousands of enthusiast clubs that deserve some attention, get on board with a cruise or show n shine. What about a decent 4WD adventure special? Get some guests on who have had something to do with motorsport in our country.

The show about the trip up bush was great. The presenters seem to work well together and the camera work improved rapidly. Certainly better than the first two series.

I second the crossover suggestion with the “other topgears” on some sort of adventure.

A few ideas to make the show even better next season:

The Great Ocean Road – one of the best roads in the world – USE THAT – also for challenges, the Nullarbor would be interesting. I’d also LOVE to see more things like the news which TGUK does well. And I definitely agree with a comment above that one small issue last season was that the comedy seemed to be attempting to replicate the UK style so much that it was probably scripted. You guys are funny on your own, just do something ridiculous and let the comedy flow!

And yes, please no Warne. I like him, but not as a car driver. If you got comedians on like you did with the Chaser boys, that would be more interesting. Perhaps if you got them or some other comedian to do a weekly spot. Just an idea.

And also, introduce more new segments, like the V8 one which was brilliant. Perhaps something looking at Aussie car ads. I know TGUK sort of touched on it but I think that would be hilarious. Also, a segment where the three of you had to blend in as car salesmen in a showroom one day would be hilarious I think. Especially if you all had to sell your least favourite car, and the person who was able to sell the most of them won, or something like that.

I am very much looking forward to the next season though, I think this show is finally about to take off!

Note to Ewen and the production team and ch9 suits,

Take notice that we do want TGA and although you have franchise obligations (read format) you need to see that what is required is our own show. Not just here is the formula you have to follow and certainly no local creativity is needed or required.

We are a possesive, demanding lo who want TGA as its own identity and entity

I don’t believe that Warnie will be on this series, if I remember correctly he was to be one of the hosts, so that is where his reports on vehicles came into the picture as there was a contract of some sorts, but the producers/directors changed their minds and Ewen came into the picture (very good decision I must add)and the rest is history, and Warnie now has his own show.
Hopefully the boffins at ch9 have read our suggestions and act upon them, I think the track is a little bit long……but who doesn’t like to have a little hoot in a ute!

    * possibly borrow a little from the TG-US series. they actually have made a decent car show! i was very surprised, i even didnt want to like it to start with but it really is very good.

TGUK have access to so many exotic and wonderful cars while here in aus, TGAU has distance to fight. So why not showcase some of the hotrodding clubs, or the small customising or one off companies. The Top Gear franchise has its regulations, but leys make Top Gear Australia an AUSTRALIAN program showcasing aussie cars and builders

Another Season. I had no idea I’d seen the previous. And it was a bit crap too. Honestly. It was crap.

    1) There is no chemistry with a script. Make an outline of what’s to be discussed, and then just chat about it. Be natural. And for goodness sake… speak up Ewen, can hardly hear you in the studio. I guess the reason Clarkson was so comfortable from the get go was because it was his show. And he was the king. So take that boys, and run with it. Be yourselves, say what you’d say, be rude, be car bores….. and give the editors something to do.

    2) Do not assume your audience are rural Australians with poor education and no brains. (The “drinking beer… that’s fun, eating a pie, thats fun” – joke, comes to mind)

3)Gives us the details of your challenges. Let us see you go and buy your cars. Challenge the hosts… and make it interesting.

    4) Like some have said there are many Australian niche brands out there that would fascinating to discover. Go get ‘em.

    5) Guests. Interview them. Talk about car history. Find out their pasts, or embarrassing moments, and bring them up. And don’t leave it last, otherwise we may as well switch the tv off.

    6) Car reviews. Give us all the specs. Tests them properly. I don’t want to see Shane Jacobson go back and forth…. straight, in a ZR1 for the whole test. Put it on a track for crying out loud. The older seasons visited many of our great race tracks….. that was good.

    7) Tell Pizzati to stop talking through his nose. It’s like having a bee in my ear.

That is all. Kudos to you though Ewen, you’re quite a natural, and a cool dude, with an infectious laugh. Keep it up.

Heres an interesting suggestion for a segment. How about compairing a BMW740i against a Ford G6E turbo. The BMW is $200,000. 4 Times the price of the Ford. The question isnt whether the BMW is a better car (because it is) but whether its 4 times better.

    Cant wait for next year.

I also have no time for S Warne; I fast forwarded anything he was in and haven’t watched it yet.

It’s been said before, but less yobbo would make for a better show.

TGA is a fairly good show, and I watch it, but like others I’d like it to be better. Opinions differ as to what would help to achieve that.

I don’t mind some ridiculous challenges and stunts, but I’d also like to see some stimulating stuff, like some profile pieces on various automotive marques (both current and long gone), investigative journalism as to exactly why the law makers make the road laws that they do, a look at great touring roads of Australia, avoid puff pieces designed to please advertisers/manufacturers but instead what you really think about the cars, a look at exactly why people buy the cars that they do.

You could get Clarkson, etc, to be the celebs in your ute when they visit Australia next year.

You could introduce the Cool Wall since TG have dropped it, and if all else fails you could drop a Morris Marina on a piano

Thanks for the feedback everyone – lots and lots to do and not much time.
Yesterday’s meeting went well; mainly about big-story stuff – the pieces you hang a series off.
We’ll get to the tests and smaller stories down the track, so Ford Fan Forever I’ll take your idea on board.
Only point I’d make is that the whole ‘is this worth multiples of that?’ argument is a slippery slope. It ends up with us all still driving the first car we ever bought.
On the Warnie front, his two stories were highly problematic. Not his fault.

Well there’s ya problem. Self imposed false deadlines. This is not a monthly magazine. Relax. Shoulders down. Deep breaths. Do it properly.

Delay the whole thing by a year and do a proper job, rather than rush it like they have so far. We can tell when it’s rushed and half-arsed. Relax. Do it properly.

TG US delayed their debut for a year and it was well worth it.

Yeh, agree with all the other comments about Warnie. He does nothing to add to the credibility of the show. He’s actually a convicted drugs-in-sports taker, remember anyone?

    My two cents worth;

Ewen, as a magazine journo you should be able to string a few words together in front of the camera instead of just cackle uncontrollably. Something to work on maybe.

Shane, you are a legend. Insightful, witty comments articulated beautifully at the perfect time.

Steve, love your work and wish that I had a tenth of your driving talent. Very jealous right now.

Hope that series 4 make big improvements especially with the ‘story’ about cars that is the show, not just the pointless mucking around.

Gadget – i agree. He’s stuck up, and he obviously doesn’t know how to test a car. It seems that nine put him on merely for being a rev-head, with out looking at his credentials as a road tester/tv person. Everyone else on the show did way better than him, because they all have experience e.g ewan as the dep-ed of TGA mag, Shane with his experience on TV, and pizzati with a fair bit of both.

Warnie is the worst show in the world, and there’s evident reasoning. TGA could be one of the best shows in the world, if you dump him back in his ever so crap chat show…

Warnie must have some top shelf compromising photos of some wealthy people. I could do a better job of car reviewing and talk show hosting. Apparently he used to be good at cricket, but after careful observation I am unable to define any other skills he may have. That could be why no one wants to see him ruin an otherwise enjoyable TV show.

Absolutely wrapped that Top Gear Australia is coming back, I don’t think it stacks up against TGUK and TGUSA but I really want to see it succeed. It’s better than any other motoring show made in Australia.

I respect and admire that Ewen takes his time to read the comments here and isn’t scared to give feedback, especially given he’s probably limited to what he can say.

I hope you also read the comments on the finalgear website, those are the true fans. As car enthusiasts they have very high expectations but if you continue to target the show at enthusiasts you won’t loose the mum and dad viewers because the show will have some credibility, if something is technical and goes over their head the mum and dad viewers, they are not disappointed, they feel better educated.

Get rid of Shane Warne, his fans respect his bowling not his personality. A quick look at the comments here show it would be a stupid business decision to keep Warnie.

Don’t write off your caravan during the first challenge, that’s just piss pore planning.

When it comes to cars Australia is a nanny state, it must be hard to show anything that’s unroadworthy or dangerous on the road unlike TGUK who can turn cars into houses. So travel more, hit the outback, look at some Japanese performance workshops, drive bunky JDM cars around New Zealand, Build a proper Toyboata with bilge pumps and drive the length of the Murray or from Victoria to Tasmania. Do a cheap car challenge across the New Guinea Highlands. Do a cheap car challenge drag racer on the sale flats or turning your bunky into a drift car. Do a Mad Max tribune challenge in Coober Pedy.

Get involved in different race series across Australia, compete in one round in your bunky, do a sprint car challenge, off road racing, club level track day, hill climbs.

Look at the success of the Bush mechanic show, bugger all budget, but the viewer can respect the ingenuity and the Aussie larrikin of those blokes driving in the middle of nowhere.

Extend the show; when the guys buy a car for a challenge show them shopping around, I think there will be some great back stories to these cars including some weird characters, it will make it easier for the aussie viewers to relate.

I look forward to the next series.

    Okibi,

I agree with what you have said.

But’s let’s add a few more scenario’s; for example, take the ute to the ute muster, Any number of car clubs have comps; TLC in Victoria have Cruisakana good fun without modifying your vehicle, the Variety bash (although this could become an international event with the other TG teams). A bit of car racing, use Steve and apparently Shane has raced as well.
Or the ultimate challenge Between TGA and TGUK a race London to Sydney for TGUK and Sydney to London for TGA following the same route perhaps meeting in the middle perhaps not and whoever gets to the opposite city first is the winner

    Just a few more thoughts.

All these things are achievable if they’d only take a year’s hiatus to produce the show properly and thoroughly.

But, sounds like from Ewen’s comments that they’re fighting some self-imposed mythical deadline again. So it’ll be half-baked as usual.

I hope you can get up to speed in series 3.75, I don’t think anybody expected TGUK quality on the first try, How about a spot of showing how the average Australian drives on public roads, show the stupid and dumb ways people go about their daily travel.
Have a competition to establish the worst drivers by area and 10% on air time per show with a public road safety message to stop idiots trying drifting on public roads.
These fools do this because they see the presenters do it, this is great TV and I love it, but it’s a bit irresponsible if it is not presented as something to do in a private area not a public area.
It should not be hard to sit at an intersection and watch how many people run red lights while talking on the phone at warp speed. A Highway patrol commentator would be good for pr as well.
Bag (tax collectors) speed cameras along the way as well with intelligent arguments against them, IE: lack of driver training, unskilled Mum and dad driving instructors, way to many hours for the learners log book as a substitute for quality etc.
You do not have to show number plates but make sure the intersection/ stretch of road is easily identified by locals.

Oxleigh. The show is for intelligent people… mostly. The audience it’s deigned for isn’t supposed to be slow minded, needing warning messages, pop up pictures, and bibs. The last thing we need is making a mockery of Australia by turning TopGear into Today Tonight.

We need to take the show to greater heights. the first thing we should do…. is promote the cars that are designed and built here. This is what Aussies want, because we’re a proud nation, and we like our own stuff… even if it’s rubbish. More Challenges. Better reviews. Bigger budget. Better Producers.

Firstly, great to hear you will be making season 4.
Welcome back Steve, glad you survived the cull, welcome to Shane & Ewan, the three of you have created a little bit of TGA chemistry that was absent in the first two seasons. Its been said in past comments, but cut back on the scripting and get stuck into talking to each other, you’re not quite bouncing of each other’s commentary yet, but for the first time we can at a least see it has the potential.
Steve, you get better every season, keep it up.
Shane, personality personified but please O please, if you’re going to do a car review, then drive it around some corners and tell us what you really think of it, just like JC direct to camera banter, you obviously have the ability to throw those of the cuff quips out there, so use it.
Ewan, Can’t put my finger on it but somehow you round out Steve & ShaneJ, you compliment them & the new dynamic so keep it up.
Regarding the Ute, if you are going to do the SIARPC segment then at least drop the celebs into a new XR8 or SS, perhaps let them choose which ute they want to burn around in and let that be another Ford Vs Holden battle.
Shane Warne, please stay off my television, you’re just too pleased with yourself and that makes you un Australian.
Maybe you could do a segment on Australian councils and their love affair with spending vast amounts of money on …. speed-humps & small round-about’s placed haphazardly for no particular reason.
For anybody that isn’t sure whether TGA should be on the air, please go back and watch season 1 & 2 of TGUK, it took them a little while to get it right, not forgetting that the original TGUK had been axed once before the current format.
great third season, short thou it was, I’m looking forward to a bright season 4 of TGA.
Cheers and Merry Xmas to all.

I know CH9 are infatuated with him because he can throw little a ball down a short piece of dirt and hit three little timber logs hidden behind an Indian’s crotch, but he’s a talentless buffoon in every other aspect of his being. Of course in Australia this is entirely irrelevant because he’s a sportsman and the only thing that matters to thick-necked TV baboons is sport. Oh…and Holdens and Fords, bums, tits and booze.

I just watched 4 eps of Top Gear US and I absolutely loved it. They’ve proved you can make a decent TG outside of the UK.

Everyone else is giving their 2c worth on Series 3, so here’s mine…

There’s two things that make the original TG successful – the hosts, and the challenges. The hosts come across as three naughty boys having a lot of fun in the cars we all wish we had the chance to drive, so we get to share the experience. I think the three Aussie hosts don’t work. Steve has a quirkiness about him that adds something, but the other two – Shane might have been funny as Kenny, but as himself… And Ewan might have done the journalistic miles, but I hardly notice that he’s there.

Forget about making it ‘Australian’ in regards to the hosts. Do we really notice that Clarkson/Hammond/May are British when they’re having fun, or do we simply notice that they’re having fun? Pick three guys that work together on screen, and that everybody will like for the right reasons.

The challenges are where you make it Australian. Given that it’s filmed in Australia, you can’t really miss. It doesn’t matter if you are driving Italian supercars or Aussie classics. The context is what makes it Australian. Not the way the hosts behave.

Oh, and if you are trying to make your mark as Top Gear Australia, don’t go to New Zealand in the second episode. It was almost as if you had already run out of places around this wide brown land – ie Australia wasn’t good enough. Go to NZ by all means, but much, much later.

    buntz,

You really are trying aren’t you but I can resist.

L.J. you are on the correct pathway. TGUK series 1-4 were crap, they finally found their collective feet series 5-12 but un fortunately it’s been steadily going down hill ever since. They either need to plan for succession or closure.

    Oddjobber,

To all the knockers out there I have a simple solution if you don’t like TGA change the channel it’s not rocket science. You lot need to accept that there are people like myself who enjoy the show and want it to succeed’ The caravan episode was hilarious and loved the lambo review too (hot car hotter driver)and on that note for god’s sake get off pizzati’s back the guy is entertaining and one hell of a driver if not adorable(yeah i said it). So say what you will i’ll be watching and can’t wait for season 4. long live TGA

I love pretzels (the edible kind) and all things Top Gear! After skimming through all the above posts I too have to agree:
    1. Don’t say pretzel so much.
    2. Drop Warnie

I will admit that I feel season 3 was the best so far. Shane, Ewen and Steve have at least (started to) develop a chemistry that was missing from the first 2 seasons….
.. and that’s what will make it a great show.
Clarkson, Hammond and May are what make TGUK great. (Hey even the TGUS hosts have developed a rapport that make them worth watching).

Also, Channel 9 PLEASE MAKE THE EPISODES AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD!!!! Not everyone is able to watch their fave show when it’s on. (.. and having to find torrents is just annoying)

Actually no one owner. I was telling it like it is. I have poured over TopGear Australia these past few months and my criticisms have only grown.

It is so painful to watch. And jokes keep coming up that no one laughs at. Like those air freshener jokes. Actually… strike that. Everything that Jacobson and Pizatti says. And SJ keeps cracking these nervous smiles during the interviews like he’s constantly being electrically shocked.

Ewen is the shows only saving grace… what an infectious character. If only he could talk louder. Or C9 could afford better sound equipment. Or a better airfield/hangar to rent… or staff, producers, writers…. even a person with a brain.

I await next “equally reasoned” comeback.

    Buntz,

I have made every effort to get your name correct, so I would appreciate the same in return.

Reasoned comment, I have said elsewhere on this site that the interviews for the “celebrity”drivers needs to be done by someone else, not SJ.

Comment based on all your previous statements
And you really lead a sad pitiful life if all you do is watch TGA eps over and over again. Mind you, is it so you can confirm in your head your blind attitude and that you and you alone are correct and that you and you alone have all the answers to make it right and to make it something you would watch( however if any of us would watch it!??), if only the powers that be would listen to you and employ you; or are you a sado-masochist and secretly enjoy the pain and the reaction to the pain, you get from the answers expressed by others to you on this sight.

Just interested so I can frame any future answers appropriately.

There’s been some great comments in earlier posts. Here’s mine.

The acting is terrible, so wooden and forced, so unconvincing. Forget the scripted lines. You need naturally funny presenters put in situations that enable the humour to come out naturally.

I’m not a prude, but how can the UK version be funny and entertaining without the use of swear words but we feel the need to drop these words in the show? Don’t tell me its Australian. Its cliched drags the show down.

The UK version works partly because of juxtaposition (e.g. Captain Slow driving supercars). A yobbo presenter driving a V8 ute doesn’t lend its self to humour but a toffy git does. Something the Australian show could take notice of. One idea with the Australian show could be to vary the ages of the presenters. The generation gap is always a good source of niggle on many topics.

If you want me as a consultant for the show my charge out rates a very reasonable.

PS No Warnie. His talk show is cringe worthy and won’t last either.

    TGA Observations,

I agree with your point about the age differences, Steve is 35 and would be the youngest, Shane is not much older probably 5 years at the most and the oldest is Ewen at 47/48 so there is not much difference. Talking of ages Jeremy is 50 going on 51, James is 48 and Richard is 40/41 so it is often 2 old men against one
The first series of TGA had this juxtaposition with Charlie who is now 50, Warren who is now 48 and of course Steve who was 32 when it started
but it is now gone. Perhaps Steve and Shane could gang up on Ewen

Any way Steve has a white racing suit. Google Steve’s crash and check out the interwiew onSBS Speedweek from that day (Aug10 2009). Also one of his twitpic taken of him playing with his go kart also shows his white suit.

I have alrady question this as one of the pic’s on this site clearly show’s a very stig like stance and Ewen has suggested I might be on some sort of substance.

    only one owner,

Yes I’m a sadomasochist, and I like being spanked really hard too.

I’ve watched each episode, two or three times. I want to like it. I really do. TopGear USA is rather good. I hear TopGear Russia isn’t too bad. But our version is so painful. The challenges aren’t interesting. The terrible scripted nervousness of when they’re in the studio is cringe worthy. The tests they do on cars is rubbish. See Corvette ZR1 review. But the track is kinda crap and doesn’t let them open the taps on a car really.

For me. Ewen Page has the right stuff. I wasn’t sure at first. But after watching the second episode when he took that V8 Supercar for a spin. He was so enthusiastic, and he just owned it. All it was a car person realising a dream, talking about nerdy car stuff.. and didn’t care who thought what.

That’s something I think they’re lacking. They need to feel like they own that show. It’s theirs for what they do with. They need to be overt car people… who talk about litreage, kilowatts, torque curves. Car history, model history, model pedigree. Not Sydney opera house camper vans. They need to work with the producers… who by default, also need to be car people. TopGear is about telling the world and his dog that there are people out there who love cars, who are car nerds, and we don’t care who knows it.

The hosts just need a topic outline of what they want to talk about during the news, or when introducing a car. Then just go free bird… and be overt and outspoken, and just let the cameras roll. Then TopGear Australia will work I think. Oh, and some proper challenges.

  129. Buntz said...

But hey maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about obviously… because I’m just a viewer, avid watcher of TopGear and car lover.

But as long as one of the hosts has what is considered a nice arse… then the show can just be as shit as it is now, and they can go on to make many more episodes. (Not likely… I fear it will get canned soon, or after the 4th season. Shame it was never really given a fighting chance.)

    women do things differently.

And as for never winning an argument with you it seems to me you are the only one who is insecure about winning or losing against me I don’t care, as I have said before men like you get very boring after awhile as there are severe limits to your own world that you live in.

I’m not saying that women can’t enjoy the show. Or that women aren’t interested in cars, and engines, power outputs and such.

But primarily. In it’s execution. TopGear is more of a show for blokes. And that is what makes it popular for a percentage of females. I don’t mean butch lesbians. Just women who don’t go in for all the girly crap.

Only a mans show could have three blokes racing to a strip joint in old supercars.

Though I’d be nervous too if I had to be on my feet all the time, and try and keep the viewers attention affixed on me and not Channel 9’s pit falls. It needs three things behind it. This is where I’m afraid we will have to agree to disagree. I think the show and it’s current hosts are great and getting better all the time. I’m not the only one who thinks this either. There are many other supporters out there, and on this very site. I also think that the guy’s are very funny, clearly we have a very different sense of humour. As for acting natural that has improved since the first two series, and I believe in time will only get better as they grow more comfortable with each other, and in front of the camera’s.
The fact is you simply don’t like shane and in your own words you hate pizzati, so my guess is it dosen’t matter how much they improve, you wont give them a chance.
By the way care to explain just how you can have an irrational hatred for a person you have never met?. The fact is I find you annoying and irksome at times, but I would never say I hate you.

We know that ch9 really didn’t want TGA, they only wanted the ratings success of TGUK but our responses have kept it alive.

Ewen we need some serious confirmation and reassurance that you are really wanted by ch9 and that series 4 will not be half arsed.

It’ll be nice to see TGA back on the telly. It’d be better to see it at a fixed time when it does return. It’d be even better to see the whole series, preferably in one run rather than a show here and a show there as Nine does with most of its series. It’s no wonder most people wait and buy the boxed sets. We can all dream that one day, Nine’s executives and programmers will understand how to run a TV network. Perhaps they should ask SBS…

@ L.J. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate the man. I just hate him as a TopGear presenter. He’s rubbish. And always with the negative comments. As for Shane… well, he’s an actor… how much more comfortable does he need to be in front of a camera?

@ only one owner. I find it funny that you should call me a know it all. But the only defense you have for the show is; “Oh… it’s got a following.”, “It’s getting better”, “Well I like it…”. My god you’re arrogant. And blind. TopGear Australia has had some good moments… but it’s mostly painful. And even the Americans can make a passable version. “Up to the boys to produce high quality TV on fresh air?”. How are they supposed to achieve this? They have no support before they even fail themselves.

Fact is. The producers, and behind the scenes people… don’t know what it takes to make a local TopGear variant.

I will still download the episodes. I will still support the show. But I will be struggling to not clinch at the lameness.

Re: your rant at comment 188.

Prior to finding out that L.J. and myself had breasts and vagina’s your were able to answer us by attacking our comments, in a non gender specific, intelligent manner, just like everyone else.

However upon finding out that we have breasts and vagina’s you have resorted to attacking the authors and not the comments. Point being no one else has changed the way they answer us after the revelation.

So could you give us 10 reasons for the following questions (5 for each question) Now these reasons have to be NON EMOTIONAL (no feelings allowed), RATIONAL AND VALID and use non gender specific language.

    1. Why did the revelation that L.J.and myself have breasts and vagina’s change the way you answer us but not change the way you answer everyone else?

    2. Why is being female and having a passion for combustion engines, wheels and things that go “poop poop”* less valid than a males passion?

Wednesday January 19, 2011 at 5:07 pm Link to comment Report comment

Ok now the war is over, I have some story ideas for the show, so here goes

    1. How about a proper comparison done between 4x4s, you know all the big boys (landcruiser, patrol, pajero etc). lets look at fuel consumption, petrol vs diesel (plus the actual costs of maitaining both)also towing ability and off road performance and reliability.
An even more interesting comparison, would be to take a look at the same vehicles at an age of 10yrs or so and in average condition. lets see who comes out on top.

    2. A good look behind the scene’s at the v8 supercars. the holden vs ford rivalry. (preferably with ford the winner, hehe)

    3. The guy’s build and race drag cars.
(not like top doorslammers, maybe super street?).

Do love the smell of burning rubber Mmmmm.

To really test 4×4 you need to do the Simpson track or Cape york or the High country in Victoria and not some namby pamby test track

    To answer your points L.J.

    1. I admit… a comparison of the latest, roughest, toughest… could be interesting. But that might give TG a 4×4 show feel. I think it should be the best softroader. Take SUV’s out bush. That’d be funny.

    2. V8 supercars… What behind scenes exactly?

    3. I think making a low key series, racer, on a TG budget would be better. Like the brick car race the boys did at silverstone. There are some production races. And 6 cylinder only ones. Something racey anyway… dragging is a bit…. crude.

  197. L.J. said...
Wednesday January 19, 2011 at 9:19 pm Link to comment Report comment

    Buntz…
I agree taking the suv’s bush could make for some funny t.v., as for the proper 4×4’s I was thinking of a more serious story, actual advice as to which is the better choice especially the older used ones.
As to your question on the V8 supercars I’d like to see more of the nitty gritty, just how they turn a car around so fast after a crash? the work that goes into it.How about how they go about setting up each car for the individual tracks.Channel 7 does cover some pit lane stuff during telecasts but not in that greater detail.
As for the guy’s building and racing drag cars, just thought it would be a bit of fun and something a bit different putting them on a proper drag strip. It’s not like I’m talking about the Andra pro series. Don’t wanna see the guy’s go top alcohol, I quite like them with all their limbs attached.

Insults. You have some issues clearly. Maybe there is a feminist man hate forum you can go and bitch about me in. Lets keep it about TopGear yeah?

mrtim123. Our version is more like Fifth Gear. Most of the problem is the guys acting awkward in the studio. And most the time they aren’t really funny. I would attribute about 40% of the show is the likability of the hosts. Some of it is probably their retarded script. And whoever writes them should be on a show like Warnie. The boys need to just be car people, and talk about cars… and let the editors do their thing

As for the show being it’s own niche. Well it’s downfall is not following the TG lore enough. It possible to do an ‘australian’ version… but they have dumbed it down. Made it less exciting. Cutting out important details in challenges, and reviews. And the devil is in the details with TopGear.

We really need someone like Andy Wilman down here… who is a former motoring journalist, and who still is… a car person.

Now that I think about it. Maybe Ewen would be a good main host. He is the oldest, and most qualified.

I believe that when the show was still on the drawing board there seamed to be a slight chance that it may turn out well, but after three attempts the show continues to be as useless as it was from the start (if not worse).

I know that the only thing I liked about the first TGA series was the camera work but even that failed to impress me this last time.

I am amazed and disappointed that Nine are still going to let this time waster have yet another go especially after kicking them off before the end of series three.

To sum up, just give up channel Nine and show TGA the door like you would any other show out there in the world of TV.
